Feb 19, 26
March 4, 11, 18, 25
ADDED DATES: April 8, 15,22
Max 8 students
Description:
This class is for painters and sculptors interested in gaining new skills and pushing the boundaries of their studio practice through the combination of encaustic, collage, and dimensional materials. Explore a range of subject matter, and work methods to create wall-based works with dimension. We will begin with backgrounds and underpainting/marking methods. Collage and assemblage materials and methods will be discussed broadly as a group, with ample time for one-on-one technical discussion with Sarah. We will discuss a variety of assemblage methods for securely attaching 3-D elements. Each class will build on the demos and skills from the prior class. The final two class will be left as open work-time with individual
questions and troubleshooting. This class is best suited to individuals with some basic art making experience, and will require the use of some hand tools and drills.
Level Beginner and above
Supply fee: $30/student to cover shared materials
Student Supply List
• 1-2 lbs of encaustic medium, you may go through more or less depending on your individual project
• A roll of paper towel (should be Viva brand or shop towels from the hardware store, the hot wax soaks
through others too quickly)
• 1 roll of 3M blue painters tape (do not buy the Duck brand, does not have enough tack)
• X-Acto knife with blades
• scissors
• A roll of baking parchment paper
• small spray bottle for water
• 3-4 Cradled Panels to work on: I suggest ordering from cheapjoes.com, get the “Joe’s Prime Cradled
Painting Panels (standard or extra- deep) in various sizes. Do not get panels any larger than 11”x 14”
• Apron or work smock
• Pen and sketchbook/notebook
• Laser printed images for transfers (make sure they are reversed so they will read correctly, extra
important if there are words in it- I will have some to share as well)
Optional Items:
• Self-healing cutting mat
• Papers you may want to collage into the work (I will have shared papers for us to work with also, nothing
with acrylic on it)
• Dried-pressed plant materials that can be pressed into the work
• 3-D items for assemblage. I will provide attachment methods and tools- consider bringing items that the
backside is flat and possibly made from an absorbent material- I will work with you to talk through how to
attach various items, but I cannot guarantee you will be able to work with everything you bring.
