PAPER: 140# cold press D’Arches ( professional grade) We will be using 1’4 sheet. , DO NOT
BUY CHEAP PAPERS.
PAPER SUPPORT: Second important item in the list. Non absorbent board. A Gatorboard is
my choice. Or, 1/8" thick markerboard . same size as paper.
PALETTE: I use a metal folding palette similar to O’Hara box. or small containers where I have
squeezed paint and add water as need. Ramikin cups are great.
BRUSHES: A good 1” flat , and a #10 or 12 round.1/2” flat brush is very useful. Flat brush is the
workhorse., A Rigger or Liner #6 (Frank Webb Liner from Cheap Joes) will be used for lines and
calligraphy. My favorite is1” mongoose brush (unknown manufacturer from India) and a round
#12 mongoose brush.
SKETCHING PENCIL: soft woodless pencil 9B (softest you can find).SKETCHING PAPER:
Ordinary bond copying paper or plain scratch pad.
MISCELLANEOUS: Cellulose sponge large, rags, a discarded terry towel, clips (bulldog spring
type), wide mouth plastic water container. Natural cosmetic sponge( sea sponge).. Hobby Lobby
carries it. Mr. Clean Magic eraser pad, Kleenex tissues, paper towel.
Easel . I work mostly by keeping the board nearly vertical and tilt it at various angles . If you
don’t have one, you may modify a camera tripod to improvise a compact easel.
COLORS:I will start out with a basic palette that consists of
1.Quinacridone gold
2.Cobalt Blue (W/N)
3.Ultramarine Blue
4. Viridian Green (W/N or M.Graham). Viridian Green Hue is not the same.s
5. Opera (Holbein). Opera by Mijello (a newcomer) is identical to Holbein’s.
6. Quinacridone Burnt Orange(only available from Daniel Smith).There is no good
substitute. I do NOT use cadmiums. Cadmiums do not mix well. Most of my mixing is
done on paper.
7. Paynes Gray
You may use your own chosen colors. Results will be different.
