Looking Deeper: Finding meaning in your work to draft an artist statement - June
Instructor: Sarah Rehmer
4 weeks
Upper Studio
6/3, 6/10, 6/17, 6/24
6-8:30pm Mondays
Through a series of formal and informal writing exercises, group discussions, and keeping a journal, you will begin to recognize not just the how in your artwork- but more importantly, the why in your artwork. We will discuss what it means to develop a body of work (and why it is important!) and how to find inspiration for your work in your everyday life. Students will be asked to bring a few of their favorite works in, and as a group, we will give a deeper look to start to recognize recurrent themes. While a finished statement may not happen by the end of the class, what will happen is you will gain a deeper understanding of your artwork and what drives you to create.
Class is limited to 10 students for ample discussion time for all.
Member $100/Non-Member $120
Supply list:
A sense of curiosity about your artwork
Sketchbook and pens
A few finished pieces of your work you would consider being a series
Intuitive Marks and Drawing for underpainting - August Class
Instructor: Sarah Rehmer
Intuitive Marks and Drawing for underpainting
Level: beginner and above
4 weeks Mondays
6-8:30pm
7/29, 8/5, 8/12, 8/19
Max 10
In this class, we look at everyday objects as a means to make marks-letting go of the preconceived ways you may think you need to start a painting. With a single large sheet of paper, students will utilize various ink and drawing mediums to let loose and explore, and then further open up creative possibilities by breaking the paper down into smaller sections to further refine with additional painting, sanding, collage and more… ultimately creating a small, but unified series of work. Appropriate for artists currently working in any medium.
Supply fee:
$25/student for paper, inks, paints

Watercolor and Collage are fabulous mediums. When we marry them in a Watercolor Collage, we create a painting that celebrates their beauty and unique characteristics. In this class, watercolor will provide the foundation for the painting ... and ... adding a variety of collage materials can contribute texture and vibrancy. This class will focus more on watercolor techniques and feature more challenging class projects than the regular Watercolor Collage Class.
Experience working in watercolor and collage materials will be helpful.
All materials will be provided
$20 materials fee will be collected at the start of class.
