Course Description:
Colored Pencils can produce drawings with texture and energy or drawings with a level
of detail that surpasses photography. It all depends on you the artist. This four-session
course will introduce you to techniques that can render beautiful images that reflect your
style and temperament. Colored pencils are a relaxing no-mess way to paint. You can
start and stop at your convenience, and you have complete control of your work. This is
your chance to try colored pencil art and see why so many talented fine artists have
made this their medium of choice.
Instructor Biography:
As an experienced commercial artist, I created illustrations and marketing materials in
both traditional and digital platforms. I’m also a gag cartoonist who sold cartoons to a
variety of publications including the Wall Street Journal, Women’s World, and The Oldie,
a British publication.
I began teaching as an adjunct instructor for the College of DuPage in their graphic arts
department. Later, I worked in the Continuing education department at Joliet Junior
College where I taught art seminars and workshops. Additionally, I was a contract
instructor for the College of Lake County, Truman College, Sterling Ledet Consulting,
and Water Street Studios. Currently, I am privileged to teach drawing and other art
classes for the LaGrange Art League. I love teaching and helping people find their way
as artists. It’s a fun and rewarding journey.
Colored Pencil Course Supplies List:
The following is a suggested list of supplies. You can purchase whatever brand you like from any supplier.
Paper
Note: Strathmore is a good brand and so is Canson. Smooth Vellum Bristol is ideal, however any drawing paper with some tooth but not highly textured will work. The paper weight should be no lighter than 80 lb. 100 lb. is ideal.
Colored PencilsNote: There are two types of colored pencils artists use. One is Prismacolor which is soft and easy to blend and burnish and the other is Polychromos which is hard and good for detail work. Artists often use both on the same artwork. For this class, however, you only need to purchase one or the other. It is up to you if you wish to purchase a set of each. You should purchase at least a 12-set box of pencils. You can order a larger set, but we will be using the colors in a 12-set box.
Prismacolor
Polychromos
Dual-Sized Pencil Sharpener
Note: There are different brands available. Derwent and Prismacolor make two good ones, but any dual-sized pencil sharpener will work. If you cannot find one, a good hand standard pencil sharpener will work, but do not use it for graphite pencils – only colored pencils.
Pencil Eraser (individual or sets)
Colorless Blenders and Burnisher Set
Kneaded Rubber Erasers
4H or Harder Graphite Pencils
Pencil Sharpener for Graphite Pencils
