Course Overview:
Pocket Paintings: Seeing Like an Artist
Your phone is one of the most powerful artistic tools you already own.
Great paintings often begin long before the first brushstroke. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use your phone’s camera to capture the fleeting moments that might otherwise go unnoticed—an interesting shadow, morning light, a winding trail, or an unexpected composition. Even artists like Degas embraced new technology to help inform their work.
Through simple demonstrations and hands-on exercises, we’ll explore composition, cropping, perspective, scale, and light by photographing the world around us. You’ll also discover how a few easy-to-use phone editing tools can help you experiment with values, color, and composition before ever picking up a paintbrush.
Whether you paint, sketch, or simply want to become a more observant traveler, this class will help you build a personal library of beautiful reference images—and begin seeing everyday moments through an artist’s eye.
No painting experience required. Just bring your smartphone and your curiosity.
