Master Artwork Studies 9-14 years old
Students will study and recreate selected portions of important artworks to learn professional techniques used by great artists. These exercises focus on understanding composition, value, color, brushwork, and artistic decision-making rather than simply copying.
Students will practice:
- Observing how master artists use light and shadow
- Understanding color palettes and mixing choices
- Studying brush strokes and mark-making
- Analyzing composition and focal points
- Developing patience, craftsmanship, and attention to detail
Examples of artists studied:
- Leonardo da Vinci — drawing, anatomy, and observation
- Rembrandt — light, shadow, and portrait expression
- John Singer Sargent — brushwork and portrait painting
- Claude Monet — color and atmosphere
- Vincent van Gogh — expressive mark-making and color
For young artists, assignments can be adapted:
- Copy a small section of a master painting
- Recreate a master’s color palette
- Redraw a famous composition in their own style
-
Create a modern artwork inspired by the technique
The painting featured was done by a student in the Young Master Artwork Studies class.
